HOW TO CONNECT YOUR LAPTOP TO YOUR TELEVISION SET

A good number of Nigerians own a laptop, several more also own both a laptop and a Television set. The question of “how can I connect my laptop to my TV set?” is commonly asked nowadays.

Before you will be able to play your favourite movies, mp4 videos, music videos or YouTube videos on your TV, you will need to know if your TV set can be connected to your laptop. Be sure to know if it’s a Flat screen, or an older model kind of TV.

There are 3 ways you can connect your laptop to your television set:

  • Using your S-Video to connect to your TV
  • Connecting to your TV using Windows
  • Connect your Laptop wirelessly to your TV.

Using your S-Video to connect to your TV

Most laptops have an S-Video port which may include TV-out functions. This is the easiest route to take, to be able to connect your laptop to either an analogue or digital TV. The problem with using the S-Video port is that it won’t provide you with High Definition or HD quality, but only sends a video signal to the TV. In this case, you will have to set up a separate audio cable from your laptop’s headphone jack to one of the TV’s audio inputs.

Connecting to your TV using Windows

Connect the video and audio cables from your laptop to your TV, you will also need to change the TV’s channel to the right input that you’re using and then configure your computer to route its video display through to the TV. If you are using Vista or Windows 7, the settings may be set automatically, otherwise you will have to right click the desktop to access the Screen Resolution and then manually select the TV as the display. You can also choose to change the video setting to connect to the TV from the Display Setting Control Panel.

Connect your Laptop wirelessly to your TV.

Another option that will easily work is to transmit a video and audio signal from your laptop to your TV wirelessly using the TV’s USB port. There are now wireless USB AV kits available that make playing video and audio from your laptop to your TV an easy task. The price of these USB AV kits varies and the only drawback is that you need to be within a line-of-site to the TV and not farther than 10 meters.

So, if you want to play those favourite videos you have on your laptop on your TV at home or work, then you will find many online websites that sell S-Video cables, audio cables and wireless AV kits to get you connected.
